The Muncie case (3831704) replaced the T10 4-speed in the 1963 Chevrolet Bel Air and Corvette by mid-May of that year. The T10 front bearing size was reduced in diameter in 1963 only. This meant that the transmission's front bearing retainer and register bore of the bellhousing were also smaller in diameter.

from Southern Ok. ""You can outfit an M20 or M21 with Rock Crusher type gears, OR actually make a 3 speed O/D out of a 4 speed case. Forth being the overdrive obviously.. Actually the 3rd gear station becomes the OD and the 4th gear station becomes 3rd,so the shift pattern is a little d,1-2-4-3.
This makes the M20 much stronger than the Saginaw or T10. The 4-speed Muncie came in three versions. Both the wide-ratio M20 and close-ratio M21 debuted in 1963 in the Corvette. The M22 "Rock Crusher" followed four years later. It uses stronger components to handle big-block power. The original M20 was only offered for one year.

Fodrea was the GM engineer whose name is listed on the design patent for the Muncie. Although he is seen with a 1957 Corvette, which came with a T10 4-speed, the design of the T10 and Muncie share the same features. This is how the Muncie countergear's design evolved. The center gear is from a BorgWarner T85 3-speed.
I started out with Pontiacs in the late '70s, and moved into Mopars because of chronic 4-speed transmission problems. I make no excuses about being a big A833 fan, and in my opinion the 18-spline hemi 4-speed is the strongest of the three. The Toploader would be a reasonbly close second, and the Muncie would be the last.

It was the transmission of choice for practically every performance-engined car made during the muscle-car heyday. ... The M22 was eventually dubbed the "Rock Crusher". It is a common misconception that all Muncie transmissions are ...
The Muncie four-speed was produced in two ratios: the wide ratio (M20) and the close-ratio (M21). That being said, there was a second, close-ratio version (M22) that was developed to survive duty behind engines with a higher torque output, and was known as the "Rock Crusher." This version was offered in high-performance big-block cars ...

The Muncie 4-speed transmission was used with many different GM models and engine combinations from 1963 through 1974. The basic design and operation theory of the gearbox changed little during this period, however several design upgrades and modifications were made during the total production run. ... M-22 "Rock Crusher" …
GM's goal with the Muncie four-speed was to produce a better shift employing larger synchro cones. He tells us both the M20 wide-ratio and M21 close-ratio transmissions were first offered in 1963. The M22 Rock Crusher would come later to accommodate the heavy twist of Chevrolet's big-blocks in the mid-1960s.
