In order to obtain a good quality powder, you'll need a ball mill (among other things). I designed mine based on Dan Williams' information and it worked great. The heart of the mill is the motor. I used a ½ hp 1725rpm 115v motor that I found on e-bay. There is usually a wide selection there with decent prices.

This is the first part of a series of 3 articles by PGI Grandmaster Ned Gorski, detailing the production of 8" ball shells in a minimum timeframe, possibly at a 3-day fireworks club event. The original series ran in 2007 in the Pyrotechnic Guild International's Bulletins #152-155. This is a somewhat revised re-issue of that series.
All he had to buy for this project were the 5/8″ steel balls and the casters. The mill can also be used as a rock tumbler, though the bottle isn't quite water tight as-is. He does not ...
These ball mills are used often in pyrotechnics for creating black powder and other pyrotechnic products. When it comes to the grinding material, the stainless steel balls are the first choice.

The static dangers peculiar to ball milling are the materials the mill is made from and also the charging and emptying of the jar. Another danger that applies to all pyrotechnic manufacture comes from clothes, including shoes. A common material used to make ball mill jars is PVC. This has been known to build up static on the outside of the jar.

In paint manufacturing, mills play a key role in grinding pigments and other components, creating a smooth and homogenous mixture. The grinding process in a ball mill ensures that the various ingredients in the paint are evenly distributed and blended, resulting in a consistent final product.
The balls form the grinding medium of the ball mill. These balls are usually made up of steel, ceramic, flint pebbles, or hard rubber. The inner wall of the shell is generally contains a coating of abrasion resistant material, e.g., manganese steel or rubber. Rubber lined (or coated) ball mills cause less wear to the products.
After blending, the 100 mL CNTs suspension was poured into a ball mill jar containing zirconia balls 4 mm in diameter. A rotation speed of 400 rpm was used and the grinding process was programmed to run for 30 h, with a 10 min break every 30 min to avoid overheating. The mixture was separated by centrifugation, washed with deionized water, …

Retsch offers mills with jar capacities from 1.5 ml up to 150 l and balls are available from 0.1 mm to 40 mm, see Figure 2. A third and very important characteristic of a ball mill, which also has a great influence on the result of a milling process, is the power of a mill. Depending on the application, jars should be moved either slowly for ...
Ball mills may build up static charge, more so if the drum is made of plastic. This makes grinding flammable or pyrotechnic materials, such as metal powders, organic powders or black powder, extremely dangerous as air-powder mixtures are explosive, while in the case of black powder a singe spark can cause detonation of the powder.
