Urine that smells bad or looks cloudy. A burning feeling when you urinate. Your doctor will diagnose a kidney stone with urine, blood, and imaging tests.

The 4 Stages of Passing a Kidney Stone

You might need to have a surgical procedure called shock wave lithotripsy that uses sound waves to break the stone up into smaller pieces, making it easier to pass. Surgeons can also use a special camera called ureteroscope (a narrow tube with a camera at the end) to get to the stone in the ureter or kidney and break it up using laser.
